The five volumes were released in a staggered schedule with the first volume being available for order from August 2015, with the last two not going up for order until February 2016. All books cost ¥3000 each, for a total of ¥150000 for all five volumes (including the collector box that comes with volume 5).
The first volume in the series was available for pre-order on the KyoAni online shop between August 24 and September 7 2015. This volume is 95 pages long and features Haru and Makoto on the back and front covers. The Staff Illustration section of this volume features exclusive new artwork from Hiroko Utsumi and Minoru Oota. The Prototype Illustration section shows "early character sheets" from director Utsumi for both Haru and Makoto. The Animation Works section features production art (including timesheets, director corrections & key frame sets) from the first five episodes of Free! as well as the opening and ending of the first series.
The second volume was available for pre-order between October 23 and November 5 2015. This volume is 90 pages long and features Nagisa and Rei on the back and front covers. The Staff Illustration section of this volume features new artwork from Chinatsu Morimoto, Miku Kadowaki, Ryouhei Muta, and Maiko Hado. The Prototype Illustration section shows "early character sheets" for Nagisa and Rei. The Animation Works section features production art (including timesheets, director corrections & key frame sets) from the episodes six to twelve.
The last volume was put up for pre-order alongside volume 4 in February 2016. This volume is 54 pages long and is unique in the fact that it does not have front and back cover features like the other four volumes, instead it is printed in plain white and looks like a TV script. Instead, this volume comes with the collector case to house all five volumes which features art of the four main swimmers of both Iwatobi and Samezuka respectively as children on the front and back sides
